According to ESPN reporter Shams Charania, Nesmith renewed his contract with the Pacers in advance for 40.4 million in two years.

Regarding this contract extension, The Athletic draft expert Sam Vecenie commented on Nesmith: "I think in the NBA, my favorite type of players are those who struggled in the early years, but finally won huge rewards through unremitting efforts. Nesmith is a perfect example. He had a difficult first two years with the Boston Celtics, but he never gave up."

Nesmith was selected by the Celtics with the 14th overall pick in the first round of 2020. He played 98 games in the first two seasons, averaging only 4.2 points per game.
